The science-based company, Migalis ApS, aims at improving and prolonging healthy aging through two synergistic effects: 1) stimulation of healthy gut bacteria leading to decreased inflammation and 2) improvement of ellagitannin metabolism in humans, leading to increased mitochondrial function and energy.

Ellagitannins are found in pomegranates, walnuts, strawberries and other fruits and nuts. These compounds have some unique effects when broken down to urolithins by the gut microbiota. Urolithins are able to stimulate mitophagy – the process by which cells get rid of dysfunctional or superfluous mitochondria. This cleaning procedure within the cell leads to an overall improved mitochondrial function, a better energy production and numerous derived beneficial effects on general health.

However, not all individuals harbor the required gut microbiota for degradation of ellagitannins to urolithins. Actually, up to 30% of a given population may not be capable of producing urolithins due to lack of certain gut bacteria and thus misses out on the unique physiological benefits of urolithins.

Migalis ApS is developing a new, patented food supplement based on a combination of an ellagitannin-rich plant extract and a novel, EU-approved food ingredient which together stimulate growth of a gut microbiota capable of metabolizing ellagitannins to urolithins – also in previous urolithin non-producers.

We believe that the naturally improved urolithin production in humans leads to a healthier gut microbiota, an improved cell function and increased energy production – 3 keystones in healthy aging.
